ChatGPT has been trained on a wide range of publicly available text, allowing it to produce essays on nearly any topic.
ChatGPT has some restrictions that you should be aware of before considering to use it for an SEO project.
Most significantly, ChatGPT cannot be relied upon to produce truthful results. The model’s inaccuracy stems from the fact that it can only suggest what sentences should follow which ones within a given paragraph on a given topic, which is not enough information to make a reliable prediction. No attempt at precision is made.
Everyone who cares about producing high-quality work should make it a primary priority.
1) Designed to Ignore Particular Types of Media (ChatGPT)
ChatGPT, for instance, is designed to avoid producing text on potentially dangerous topics including violent violence, explicit sex, and directions on how to create an explosive device.
2) Ignorant of the News
This restriction is compounded by the fact that it is unaware of any information produced after the year 2021.
Therefore, ChatGPT as it currently exists may not be suitable if you need to provide content that is timely and relevant.
3) Inherent Prejudices
Understandably, this has the drawback of being programmed to be helpful, honest, and innocuous.
Those aren’t just good intentions; they’re biases that the programmers consciously programmed into the system.
It would appear that the intention of the programming is to avoid injury, and hence any negative feedback is disabled.
That’s to the article’s benefit, but it also gently alters it from its neutral state.
If you want ChatGPT to go in a certain direction, you’ll have to take the metaphorical wheel and tell it to go there.
I requested that ChatGPT compose two stories, one in the vein of Raymond Carver and another in the vein of Raymond Chandler’s mysteries.
The stories ended optimistically, which is out of character for both authors.
Since this is not how Raymond Carver’s stories often went, I had to give ChatGPT some specific instructions to acquire the results I was looking for, including a prohibition on happy endings and a request that the Carver-style ending not provide a conclusion.
The key is that one must be mindful of the biases inherent in ChatGPT and how they may affect the results.
4) Very specific guidance is needed for ChatGPT.
For ChatGPT to produce work that is more likely to be highly creative or take a certain stance, explicit instructions must be provided.
The higher the level of sophistication in the final product, the more instructions it requires.
Understand that this is both a resource and a handicap.
Requests for content with fewer specifics are more likely to produce results that are interchangeable with those of other requests.
I decided to test it out by cloning the Facebook-discussed query and its results.
ChatGPT created an entirely new essay for me, although it followed the same basic format when I asked it the same question.
Each essay was unique, although they all followed the same general format and discussed related themes using completely distinct language.
ChatGPT is programmed to pick totally random terms when guessing what the next word in an article should be, therefore it stands to reason that it doesn’t plagiarize itself.
Nonetheless, the fact that comparable requests produce similar articles demonstrates the limitations of the “give me this” approach.
5) It Possible to Track Chat GPT Data?
Algorithms for identifying artificial intelligence-created content have been the focus of research at Google and other companies for a long time.
There is a plenty of literature on the subject; I’ll just highlight one piece from March 2022 that makes use of data from GPT-2 and GPT-3.
Its title is “Adversarial Robustness of Neural-Statistical Features in Detection of Generative Transformers” (PDF).
Scientists wanted to investigate whether they could figure out how to identify artificial intelligence-created content that used stealthy algorithms.
They tried various approaches, such as the BERT algorithm’s replacement of terms with synonyms and another that included misspellings.
What they found was that even if an algorithm was specifically built to avoid detection, some statistical elements of the AI-produced text, such as Gunning-Fog Index and Flesch Index scores, were effective in determining whether a text was computer generated or not.
6) Subtle Watermarking
And it gets better: OpenAI has developed cryptographic watermarking to help identify content made with an OpenAI product like ChatGPT.
An OpenAI researcher named Scott Aaronson was featured in a video titled, “Scott Aaronson Talks AI Safety,” which was highlighted in a recent article.
According to the study’s author, ethical AI methods like watermarking have the potential to become widespread in the same way that Robots.txt has become the de facto standard for responsible web crawling.
